A Movie that Packs a Real Punch!: An exercise inspired by “The Fighter”

The Fighter – A look at the early years of boxer “Irish” Micky Ward and his brother who helped train him before going pro in the mid 1980s.

  • Crunches with Punches – 4 years, and up to 10 hours per day. That’s how long Mark Wahlberg reportedly spent training for his role in the movie The Fighter. “Wow” may be the first thought that comes to your mind. Your second thought might be that simply getting off of your couch is enough of a fight.

But instead of 10 hours a day how about 6 minutes? That’s how long this boxing inspired exercise should take you. Yes crunches are never fun, but these are mixed with a simple punching motion that not only keeps things more fun and interesting, but helps work the muscles deeper in your core.

Here are the three simple steps to this exercise…

1. Start this exercise by lying down. Your legs should be bent and your feet flat on the floor. Head should be resting on the floor, and your hands gripped but resting on your chest.

2. Exhale and lift your head slightly, twist your hips as you punch your left fist towards your right knee. Inhale and lower.

3. Exhale and punch your right fist toward your left knee. Return to start position for one full rep.

We can’t emphasize enough how important strengthening your core muscles can be for your entire body, it can even be a cause of back and leg pain that we all often experience. So try this exercise out, and don’t be afraid to push yourself a little bit. The hardest part of staying active can be just getting up and starting something.

It may sound overwhelming at first, but if The Fighter (and pretty much every other boxing movie ever made) has taught us anything, it’s that the underdog can do anything, and always rises to the top. (Sorry for the drama. Its Oscar season and we couldn’t help ourselves)

So stay positive, stay healthy, and most of all stay tuned to our future blogs! We will keep looking for fun and interesting ways to always help New Yorkers DO MORE and STRESS LESS.

Enjoy the Oscars!
